killed in the war (in India SRC:Yvonne Simmonds). However, on the copy of Sarah's Birth cert. he is the signature to obtain it for purposes
of the Factory and Workshop Act. The copy is dated 30th Jan 1919, three years after her mother Mary's remarriage, whos marriage certificate states she is a a "widow" !
Her marriage certificate also shows her maiden name as Shingler. It also shows her father as "deceased". I guess this is referring to Edwin and not her real father, Francis.

Jane is the head of the houshold and there is her daughter-in-law Mary Charlesworth(39,widow,pauper-railway lab. widow,b.Leighton) - It's a good guess that she is Jane's other son, Jame's wife. Also some grand kids Jane (6,scholar,b.Leighton), Martha (5,b.Leighton) and Peter (8,scholar,b.Leighton) - so I'm not sure if they are Roberts children or Mary's. [Class: HO107; Piece: 2001; Folio: 195; Page: 17; GSU roll: 87403] NB. What makes John a brother-in-law? I'm guessing that he's Ann Hawd's brother since his condition is unmarried.

1861 Census for Newcastle-under-Lyme - living in Fletcher St (35,lodger,unmarr,?wainer, b.Gloustershire) - he's living with Jane Burks? (35,Marr?,b.Cannock) with children Frederick (17,Gen. [Class: RG9; Piece: 1916; Folio: 146; Page: 24; GSU roll: 542887] NB. This looks lile the right family (no pun intended!) as the ages and places match. However if John is just the lodger and Jane has a different surname then maybe she's a widow here and John marrys her later. This would mean that Elizabeth Wright has another biological father.

Today "Trentmill Road derives its name from the Upper Botteslow Mill, on the Trent, between at least 1759 and 1912, part of which (in 1960) was still standing at the end of Trentmill Road. Lower Botteslow Mill, a little way downstream was in use by 1792 and still in use in the early 1920's.
The trade directories often did not distinguish between the two Botteslow mills, one of which was a bone mill in 1834, but both were again flint mills by the 1860's "

General Notes: 1841 Census for Chedleton, Staffs - living in Wetley Rocks (60,Ag.Lab,b.Staffs) with wife Mary (60,b.Staffs) and children Elizabeth (30,b.Staffs), Stephen (20,Butcher,b.Staffs), Joseph (15,Ag. I'm guessing that this family is related. Lucy is the right age and the 1861 census for Lucy and Robert Durno shows a Samuel Shenton (aged 28, Lodger,Miller,b. Wetley Rocks), although Lucy's place of birth is Hanley. However, on the 1871 and 1891 census her place of birth is Wetley Rocks. NB. Next door was another Shenton family - William Shenton (45, Wood Ranger,b.Staffs) and family.
Second thoughts on this 1841 Census entry - I suspect that Stephen and Mary are the grandparents of James, Lucy, Samuel and Joseph (aged 2) and that Stephen (aged 20) is married to Elizabeth, whose children they are. Joseph (aged 15) is the younger Stephen's brother. A search on the IGI shows a Stephen (b. 1816) and Joseph (b.1823) born about the right time with parents of Stephen and Mary. Another IGI birth shows another Lucy born in 1819 to Stephen and Mary.
Third thoughts on this, and makes more sense!! - Elizabeth (aged 30) is the mum to James (10), Lucy (7), Samuel (5) and Joseph (2) - father(s) unknown!! [source Jean Jones (pjeanj@btinternet.com]) and Pat Sheldon (sheldon6154@googlemail.com, via Genes Reconnected).

1871 Census for Cheddleton - living in Wetley Rocks (93,widower,Basket Maker Master,b. Cheddleton). [Class: RG10; Piece: 2887; Folio: 43; Page: 16; GSU roll: 836393.] NB. Next door is another Shenton family - Thomas Shenton (35, Ag. Labourer, b.Cheddleton) and wife Agnes (34,Housewife,b.Leek) - this is probably the son of the William living nearby on earlier census's.

Stephen was sometimes described as a "basket maker" and sometimes as a "crate maker". He lived in a cottage attached to the Plough Inn at Wetley Rocks [source: Robert Milner, writer for Wetley Rocks and Cheddleton c/o Jean Jones (pjeanj@btinternet.com)]

[Pat Sheldon (sheldon6154@googlemail.com) had Mary born Cheddleton, bapt.18th Nov 1782, with parents John and Ann Lovatt, however Jean Jones (pjeanj@btinternet.com] had Mary born Trentham, bapt. 21st April 1782 daughter of Joseph Lovatt and Elizabeth. She'd checked Mary's marriage certificate but that only gave Stoke on Trent as place of residence, 1841 census said Staffordshire, but the 1851 census said Trentham as her place of birth. Jean's evidence appears to be the best.]

Anne Cole's research makes them related. I wasn't sure if he is related but almost certain. (see 1851 Hanley Census - he lived in the same street as two other Duncalf families; William and Sarah Duncalf and James and Ann Duncalf. Both William and James are the right age to be sons of James and all three men are boiler makers. Coincidence ?? The
younger James and William don't share the same birth place though.)
