1916 Lived At 11 Back America Street, Hanley, S-O-T. [March 1916]

1891 Living at - 10 Back West St., Hanley , named as "William" (17, Coal Miner's assistant,b.Hanley) - see notes for father Frederick. [1891 Census rg12/pc2167/fo126/pg35,gsu roll6097277] NB. Back West St was renamed to Ashmore Street Back in the early 1950's.

1901"staying" in Stafford Prison (26,prisoner,Coal Miner, b. Hanley) [1901 Census rg13,pc2572,fo161,pg8].
Also on the 1901 census, living down the street from Francis's parents was his future wife, Mary Harriet Ferriday (living at 18 West Street, Hanley).

1911 Living in 22 Back West Street, Hanley (35,single,Colliery Loader Underground,b.Hanley) with mother Eliza (58,widower,Housekeeper,b.Hanley) and brothers Samuel and Robert

Also got a group army picture - could be one of Francis - on the back it said "from Bill" .
He was a Corporel in the 26th Middlesex Regiment(3683) at Whitley.

26th (Service) Battalion (3rd Public Works Pioneers)
Formed in London on 9 August 1915 by Lt-Col. John Ward MP. Moved to Alexandra Park.
2 May 1916 : landed at Le Havre.
24 August 1916 : landed at Salonika and attached to 27th Division as Pioneer Battalion.
November 1917 : moved with the Division to Italy but returned to France in March 1918.

He was quite handy - making shoes and tailoring clothes for a hobby.
He also used to make dandelion beer, keep chickens and wippets to go"rabbiting" with. He also liked his drink - a little too much sometimes!

"There is a rumour that my great grandfather John William Johnson's
sister Sarah Ann gave birth to a son believed to be fathered by your
grandfather [Francis William Duncalf]! She later went on to marry his brother John Duncalf, who brought him up as his own. The child was known as George Johnson and is
in the 1901 census, living with Sarah and the Johnson family.
I sent for the birth certificate which states Sarah Ann as his mother

Francis married Mary Harriet Ferriday, daughter of Richard Ferriday and Elizabeth Wild, on 7 Mar 1916 in Registry Office, S-O-T, Staffs.45 (Mary Harriet Ferriday was born on 29 Jun 1882 in 45, High Street, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs,46 died on 25 Apr 1967 in 183, Newhouse Rd, Bucknall, S-O-T 47 and was buried in 1967 in Carmountside Crematorium, S-O-T.)
